*Starred Review* As America continues to debate the position of Islam in a post-9/11 society, it is critical that we have an open discourse, informed by knowledge of the various contributions made by Muslim Americans to U.S. society. In this set, Curtis (religious studies, Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis) and more than 130 other scholars introduce readers to a wide diversity of Muslim American people, ideas, and institutions (including Muhammad Ali, Dave Chappelle, Sufism, and the Islamic Center of Washington, D.C.) that have greatly influenced and continue to shape American identity. Related issues, events, court cases, and other topics are covered as well. Following a brief introduction and 14-page chronology (described in the introduction as “the most comprehensive chronology of Muslim-American history ever published”), the work dives into the 280 individual A–Z signed entries, which vary in length from a few paragraphs for specific topics such as LADO (Latino American Dawah Organization) to several pages for topics such as Dress; Health care; Nation of Islam; Politics; Qur’an; September 11, 2001; and Shari ‘a. The entries are all cross-referenced, composed of even scholarship, and contain a list of both print and online works for further study. Scattered throughout the two volumes are 50 essential documents, including articles, poems, letters, and speeches, such as “Poems of Daniel Abdal-Hayy Moore” and “A Fatwa Concerning Noble Drew Ali” (1931). These documents, which follow corresponding entries, allow users to expand their understanding of the subject under discussion as well as familiarize themselves with new perspectives. The work concludes with an extensive 12-page bibliography and a comprehensive index. Also included in an appendix of the work is the full text of President Obama’s 2009 speech in Cairo, Egypt, in which he addressed past injuries and called for a future sustained effort to locate common religious and cultural ground. Although it covers some of the same topics as Encyclopedia of Islam in the United States (Greenwood, 2007), Encyclopedia of Muslim-American History has secular as well as a religious focus. Filled with high-quality, relevant information on a subject of profound importance, it is a worthwhile addition to any high-school, public, or college library collection. --Brian Odom
